I shop at two independent groceries, and never go to Lucky, Safeway, Trader Joe's, and Walmart isn't even a visible presence. Our food is not expensive, and it's almost all organic. I have a tendency to buy from farmers or producers I know or who have a really good reputation for clean food. I learned to shop when I was young, and I get the feeling most people don't know how to. The government put out pamphlets and books during World War II. If you can find any, get them. They're a big help. Prepared foods are not. We're living on Social Security and have solar and two EVs, and I do not find the economy an issue.
Yes, Berkeley is supposed to have the best farmers market, but I like San Francisco's better. We have a produce market here, Monterey Market, and the guy who used to run it basically made all the organic farmers. When I shop there, I'm looking for specific produce and farmers. Berkeley Bowl, our two supermarket chain, has the best produce sections (organic and non-organic.) Yesterday I bought two large boxes of strawberries for $2 each. They were non-organic, but I recognized the farmer's name. When you go over to Marin and Sonoma counties on the weekend, there are a lot of produce stands on the back roads.
James, markets that have personal relationships with farmers often get the best deals. They go down to the farmers market (?) in Oakland every morning about 3am and buy produce. The turnover is so fast that in the middle of the afternoon you see the market's trucks unloading full delivery trucks to replenish the empty sections in the market. The expensive restaurants like to buy at the Berkeley Farmers Market. If there are any produce markets nearby, you might want to check it out. Take care.
